On Saturday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced the launch of a bullet train project for West Bengal. This proposed corridor will connect Delhi to Siliguri, passing through key cities such as Lucknow, Varanasi, and Patna. According to Vaishnaw, the bullet train will significantly reduce travel time to just six hours.
Funding and Development
The minister highlighted that the funding for railway projects in West Bengal has surged from ₹4,000 crores during the UPA government to ₹14,205 crores under the current Modi administration. He pointed out that the previous government allocated only ₹4,000 crores, while Prime Minister Modi has now earmarked ₹14,205 crores for railway development in the state. Vaishnaw criticized the former state government for delaying several railway projects due to a lack of permissions, stating that many projects only required administrative approval and some even reached the courts.
Recent Developments in Kolkata
Vaishnaw also mentioned that West Bengal has received Vande Bharat sleeper trains and Amrit Bharat trains ahead of several other states, with more projects expected to be announced in the future. He noted that during the Modi government's tenure, a 45-kilometer metro line in Kolkata has been completed, contrasting it with the 28 kilometers constructed over 42 years under the previous opposition government.
