A trend is currently sweeping across social media: people upload their photos to AI platforms and use prompts to apply an "80s-style" effect, instantly creating a vintage-looking image. Prior to this, trends like "Ghiblify" had also gone viral.

Now, people are uploading their photos to platforms like ChatGPT, Gemini, or other AI services, which then transform the images into specific styles. Since the process takes only a few seconds, it is both entertaining and appealing to users.

However, one crucial aspect often goes unnoticed: you aren't just generating an image with AI; you are also handing over your personal data along with the photo.

When you upload a selfie to ChatGPT, Gemini, or similar AI platforms, you are sharing more than just a picture—you are sharing data. Details such as when the photo was taken, the device used, the location, and your facial features all constitute your personal data.

AI systems continuously collect this information. According to a report by *Wired*, uploading a photo can expose details such as your text inputs, the specific image uploaded, your IP address, and the device being used.

A significant point to consider is that while the AI-generated image might disappear after a while, the original photo you uploaded could remain on the platform for a much longer period. Much of this depends on the platform's specific data retention policy.

For instance, even if you delete your data from ChatGPT, it may remain on the server for up to 30 days. Similarly, Gemini retains data for 18 months by default.

It is believed that as people increasingly use AI and share details of their daily lives, a comprehensive profile of the user could gradually be built up. Experts believe that people should avoid trends that involve uploading content linked to their personal identity.
