Renault has just pulled the covers off its first pickup truck built specifically for the Brazilian market, the Niagara. It arrives at an interesting time, with Mahindra also gearing up to launch its own lifestyle pickup, the Scorpio Lifestyler, in India by early 2027. But while the two pickups might seem like natural rivals on paper, their launch plans point in very different directions.
Renault Niagara Pickup Debuts
The Niagara is built on the same RGMP (Renault Group Modular Platform) architecture that underpins the new-generation Duster, and it borrows visual cues from Renault’s newer international model line, including the upcoming Boreal SUV. Design highlights include a bold front fascia with full-LED headlamps, a front skid plate, black body cladding, roof bars, and an optional roll bar setup for a rugged, adventure-ready look.
It’s a dual-cab pickup with a 938-litre cargo bed and a 654 kg payload capacity. In terms of dimensions, the Niagara measures 4,940 mm in length (4,910 mm for the 4×2 variant), 1,830 mm in width, and 1,720 mm in height, with a 2,960 mm wheelbase. Ground clearance is 233 mm, and it runs on 17- or 18-inch wheels, depending on the variant.
Features
Sharing underpinnings with the Duster and Boreal, it offers a broadly similar tech package. Inside, the Niagara gets a 10.25-inch instrument cluster, a 10.1-inch infotainment touchscreen, Level 2 ADAS, a 360-degree camera, ambient lighting, EPB, and more.
Powertrain
At launch, the Niagara will be powered by a 1.3-litre turbo-petrol engine producing 156 bhp and 270 Nm of torque, paired with either a 6-speed manual or a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic. Most variants will be front-wheel drive, but the range-topping Outsider trim adds a 4×4 option. Renault has also confirmed hybrid powertrains will join the Niagara lineup from 2027 as part of its broader electrification push in the region.
Will It Be Launched In India?
Renault built the Niagara to take on Latin America’s booming pickup segment. So far, there’s no indication the Niagara is headed to India, and given how niche the lifestyle pickup segment remains here, an India launch looks unlikely for now. Renault’s India roadmap focuses on refreshing existing products and launching new models, with the Boreal SUV and an updated Triber expected to lead its next phase of launches.
