Cody Gakpo was outstanding for Liverpool across their first three Premier League matches, but there is uncertainty over whether he will return against Fulham.

Gakpo is a doubt for Saturday’s meeting with Fulham as the Reds aim to build on their first Premier League victory since April, which came in their most recent outing against Ipswich Town.

The Netherlands forward set up both of Alexander Isak’s goals — the only goals of the match — as Liverpool picked up three points with a 2-0 win at Portman Road.

He was then left out of Liverpool’s midweek contest against Atletico Madrid, which the Reds won 2-1, because of adductor problems on both sides, and the Dutch attacker remains uncertain for the Fulham game.

The 27-year-old had also impressed in his two Premier League appearances before the Ipswich match, including a stunning long-range effort in Liverpool’s 2-2 draw on the opening day at St James’ Park.

In the next match, his clever movement created the opening for a pinpoint cross to Isak against Nottingham Forest, in another 2-2 draw.

Gakpo registered four goal involvements in his opening three Premier League matches. Only Mohamed Salah has managed more while starting a league season for Liverpool this century, with six contributions in 2024-25.

Bradley Barcola, who started on Wednesday in place of the Dutchman, also raised concerns after going off during the Reds’ Champions League win.

Andoni Iraola has since provided an update on both players in his pre-Fulham press conference, with Barcola’s issue viewed as minor, while Gakpo’s absence could continue.

The Basque manager said: “Barcola was just cramps. We have to evaluate how he is today, but there is no injury. I think he should be available if everything goes normal.

"Cody, we will see,” he continued. “We will try today and see if he is ready for tomorrow, or if we need to wait until the next one."

Iraola’s team, despite losing star forward Salah last season, have performed well in attack, scoring at least two goals in every one of their Premier League and Champions League matches.

Defensively, however, his side have let in five goals in four matches. In their only Premier League clean sheet of the campaign so far, against Ipswich last Friday, the newly-promoted side posted a higher xG than the Reds.

Liverpool are back in English top-flight action against Fulham this weekend, with Gakpo still potentially set to miss out.
