Pro Ref, the body that oversees refereeing in England, said in a statement that Erling Haaland’s winning goal in Sunday’s Manchester derby should not have been allowed to stand. Manchester City had beaten Manchester United 1-0 earlier that day.

The striker’s effort was first disallowed for offside, but VAR later overturned the on-field call and the referee awarded the goal.

Haaland himself was onside, but attention centred on Enzo Fernandez, who attempted to head the ball while in an offside position and should have been penalised. Even though he did not touch the ball, the likely effect of his positioning was not taken into account, and an on-field review should have been advised.

Manchester United were contacted to acknowledge what has been deemed an error of judgement.

The incident will now undergo further review.
