Tezzbuzz Desk- Devotees wait for Ganesh Utsav throughout the year. From welcoming Ganpati Bappa to his worship and offering, everything has its own special tradition. Modak is considered very dear to Lord Ganesha, hence during Ganesh Chaturthi, different types of modaks are made in homes.

Among these, the traditional Ukdiche Modak of Maharashtra is very popular. Its outer layer is made from rice flour, while the inside is filled with a delicious filling of coconut and jaggery. It is cooked in steam, due to which the modaks become soft and tasty.

Ingredients required for Ukadiche Modak

for stuffing

  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • ½ tbsp poppy seeds
  • 5-6 chopped cashews
  • 5-6 chopped almonds
  • 3 cups grated coconut
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1½ cups jaggery
  • ¼ tsp nutmeg powder
  • 1 tsp cardamom powder

For the outer layer of modak

  • 1½ cups water
  • ½ cup milk
  • a pinch of salt
  • 1 tbsp ghee
  • 1 tablespoon sago flour
  • 2 cups fine rice flour
  • Some ghee as required

to decorate

  • saffron soaked in milk
  • silver work

Prepare modak stuffing like this

First of all, heat ghee in a pan. Add poppy seeds, chopped cashews and almonds and fry lightly. Now add grated coconut to it and cook on low flame for about 4 to 5 minutes.

After this add jaggery and mix well. Cook the mixture until the jaggery melts. Then cook it for a few more minutes, so that the excess moisture reduces.

Now add nutmeg and cardamom powder and mix well. Switch off the gas and leave the stuffing to cool.

Prepare rice flour dough like this

Heat water and milk in a pan. Add salt and ghee in it. Now add sago flour and rice flour and mix well. Cover the mixture and cook on low flame for about 5 minutes. After this take it out in a plate. Apply some ghee and knead the mixture well. Keep in mind that the dough should remain soft, so that the outer layer of modak can be prepared easily.

Now make beautiful shaped modaks

Make small lemon sized balls from the prepared dough. Apply some rice flour on a circle and roll it like a small and thin puri.

Place the prepared coconut-jaggery stuffing in the middle. Now make small pleats on the edges with the help of fingers and slowly bring them upwards and close the modak.

Prepare all the modaks in the same manner. A little saffron milk can be applied on each modak.

Cook in steam and offer to Bappa.

Now place the prepared modaks in the steamer and steam them thoroughly. After cooking, let the modak cool down a bit. If you want, decorate them by applying silver work on top. These traditional Ukdiche Modaks can be offered to Lord Ganesha during the puja on the day of Ganesh Chaturthi. Fresh home made modak will make the taste of Ganpati festival even more special.
