Manchester United let Everton draw level twice as the two sides played out an entertaining 2-2 stalemate away at the Hill Dickinson Stadium on Sunday.

In the end, the visitors paid for a fragile mentality after taking the lead, as they repeatedly tried to protect their advantage. It was a sharp contrast to the drive and intensity the Red Devils had shown last week against Ipswich Town.

Michael Carrick must also shoulder part of the blame for his poor substitutions, having chosen to make defensive changes at every opportunity, including taking off the in-form Marcus Rashford and both full-backs.

The head coach’s decision to keep Matheus Cunha on until the 70th minute was baffling, especially given how poor the Brazilian was throughout the match.

The 27-year-old registered 0 shots on target and did not complete even a single dribble.

To make matters worse, the former Wolverhampton Wanderers forward did not attempt a single cross and also failed to produce even one key pass.

Over his 70 minutes on the pitch, the Brazil international finished with 79% passing accuracy and lost possession 11 times.

Usually so lively and hard-working without the ball, Matheus Cunha struggled badly in that aspect too.

He lost all of his aerial duels and managed just one ball recovery. He did, however, win two tackles.

The United No.10 ought to have scored once in each half, but on both occasions he wasted the openings created by Marcus Rashford.

The false nine role is clearly not getting the best out of him, and he looks far more effective either out wide or as a support striker.

It remains to be seen whether Carrick changes his approach for the club’s first Champions League match of the season in midweek.
