Manchester United defender Luke Shaw was one of the standout performers as he and his teammates were held to a 2-2 draw by Everton at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
United went in front shortly after the restart when Bryan Mbeumo drove through the defence and calmly placed his effort into the bottom corner.
However, United strangely took their foot off the pedal and allowed Everton a route back into the match. The home side capitalised in the 83rd minute, drawing level through Tyrique George, who smashed his finish into the roof of the net.
The Red Devils believed they had found the winner when Benjamin Sesko nodded in Shaw’s cross beyond the reach of Jordan Pickford, but Ainsley Maitland-Niles responded in dramatic fashion. The former Arsenal defender advanced and thundered a powerful strike from outside the area into the United goal, making it 2-2 and ensuring the points were shared.
Several United players appeared below their usual level, but Shaw underlined just how important he remains to the side.
In the 66 minutes he spent on the pitch before being substituted, Shaw produced one assist and one shot. He was, of course, the provider of an excellent delivery for Sesko.
His service from wide positions was impeccable, with each of his three crosses finding a Manchester United teammate. Shaw also showed impressive calmness on the ball, completing 39 of his 43 passes for a pass success rate of 91%.
The England international had 64 touches during the match.
Defensively, he was immense, winning the only tackle he attempted while also making three clearances and blocking three shots.
Shaw also recorded one recovery, won one of his three ground duels and came out on top in the only aerial duel he contested.
It was a clear step up from Shaw’s performance against Ipswich, and he will be eager to carry that form into Thursday’s Champions League opener against Sabah.
