Manchester City won the 2011/12 Premier League title in the most dramatic fashion imaginable, and Sergio Aguero has revealed that he had anticipated the move in advance.

Aguero’s winner against Queens Park Rangers on the final day of the 2011/12 season remains arguably the most iconic moment in Premier League history.

The Argentine forward’s stoppage-time goal gave Manchester City a 3-2 win, snatched the title away from their city rivals Manchester United and delivered it to the blue side of Manchester for the first time since 1968.

Aguero has now told FourFourTwo that he had actually prepared the groundwork for that goal, with help from an unexpected accomplice.

Mario Balotelli was never especially known for providing assists during his two and a half seasons at the Etihad Stadium. Before that match against QPR, the Italian had created only one Premier League goal in 40 appearances.

But before that memorable goal, Aguero had taken Balotelli aside and told him exactly what he wanted — a one-two into the box that he could finish.

Aguero told FourFourTwo: “I made the decision to drop back to receive the pass from Nigel de Jong, then I tried to play a one-two with Mario Balotelli.

“That was already in my mind — I had been planning it, to see if I could score.

“Before that, I had told Mario that I was going to look for him, that I was going to pass it to him so that he could return it to me with a one-two and get an assist.

“Luckily, the plan I had with him worked out — it ended up being the perfect play. I did the one-two with Mario, I scored and we won the title.”

Aguero continued: “Moments like that stay with you forever.

“It is a memory I will never forget for the rest of my life.

“Now that I am not playing anymore and I understand much more how highly that title is valued, it brings back very lovely memories whenever I speak about it.”
