New Delhi, September 2 (IANS). Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said on Wednesday that the government expects investment in the data center sector to reach around $200 billion. This reflects the massive opportunities arising from India's rapidly growing digital economy and AI ecosystem.
The Union Minister said during the CEO Roundtable on “Ease of Doing Business (EODB) for Scaling India Data Center Ecosystem” here that India is the best place in the world to set up data centres.
Goyal expressed confidence in India's growth prospects amid global uncertainty and fluctuations and said that the country's growth rate in the first quarter was 7.8 percent.
Goyal also mentioned the potential of the data center and semiconductor industries, India's growing presence in the field of AI and the country's expanded manufacturing base for global quality products. He said that these sectors will drive India's economic growth in the coming years and contribute to achieving the goal of becoming a $30 trillion economy by 2047.
He said that the talks with the parties were positive and discussions between various departments of the government and states have already helped in resolving many issues.
This roundtable was organized as a sequel to the first CEO Roundtable aimed at further strengthening the enabling ecosystem for rapid and sustainable expansion of India's data center sector.
According to an official statement, the focus of discussion was ease of doing business and faster deployment of data center infrastructure. In this, especially power, land, regulatory and fiscal issues were discussed.
The parties discussed measures to ensure adequate and reliable power availability. This includes measures such as cluster based transmission and substation planning, sanctioned load from day one, dual power feeders and facilitating procurement of renewable energy across state borders.
The need for ready land banks and pre-identified power-ready plots for data centers was also stressed.
Hyperscalers are expected to account for over 80 per cent of total data center capacity consumption in the first half of 2026, underscoring India's emergence as a destination for AI infrastructure.
