Kathmandu. The devastating floods caused by glacier collapse in Nepal and China have caused huge devastation. The death toll in this disaster has crossed the 1,000 mark. According to Nepal's Disaster Management Agency, 987 people have died so far in Nepal, while 16 people have lost their lives in China. In this way the total number of dead has reached 1,003. At the same time, 3,916 people are still missing, including 583 foreign nationals.
How did this tragedy begin?
This terrible disaster in Nepal started on August 26 in the high altitude areas of the Himalayas. According to scientists, the bedrock below the glacier broke from a height of about 5,200 meters in the Langtang Lirung area of Rasuwa district, causing ice, rock and a huge amount of debris to fall directly into the Lende River. This event caused such a strong vibration that it was recorded as a seismic tremor of 5.2 magnitude. This powerful flood filled with debris spread across many areas of Tibet and Nepal and caused massive devastation.
Relief and rescue operations continue
According to the Disaster Management Agency, so far 11,814 people have been rescued safely in this flood. With the help of helicopters and other aircraft, emergency teams are reaching those areas where road connectivity has been completely cut off due to floods and landslides. The search operation is continuing to find the missing people. The study of Nepal Environment Society has also confirmed that a huge part of the glacier broke and fell into the river and due to this this devastating flood occurred.
