It is common for oil, spices and food splatters to fall on the gas stove during daily cooking in the kitchen. People clean the surface of the stove regularly, but the burner and its ring are often ignored. If not cleaned for a long time, a thick layer of grease and burnt dirt accumulates on them, due to which the burner starts appearing black.
However, there is no need to buy expensive cleaners or spend hours scrubbing to clean the burner. It can be cleaned with common household items like warm water, mild dishwash and baking soda. Let us know the easy way.
A dirty burner doesn't just look bad
Accumulation of dirt in the small holes of the burner can affect the flow of gas. This can cause the flame to appear weak, uneven, or yellow. Sometimes problems arise in ignition also. Therefore, while cleaning the stove, it is important to clean the burners and rings regularly.
First remove the burner and ring
Before starting cleaning, allow the gas stove to cool completely and turn off the gas supply. After this, carefully remove the burner cap, ring and pan support. By cleaning different parts, the grease and burnt dirt accumulated on them can be easily removed.
Soak in warm water for a while
Take warm water in a vessel and add some mild dishwash liquid to it. Now soak the burner cap and ring in it for about 20 to 30 minutes. This will soften the old grease and grime.
If there is a lot of dirt, a small amount of white vinegar can be added to the water. However, after cleaning the burner, it is important to wash it thoroughly and dry it completely.
Remove stubborn dirt with baking soda
If the black stains and burnt layer are not coming off even after soaking, then make a thick paste of baking soda and some water. Apply it on the affected area and leave it for some time.
After this, clean gently with a soft brush or sponge. A soft old toothbrush can be used to remove dirt accumulated around the small holes of the burner. Avoid scratching the hole with a pin, needle, or sharp metal object, as this may alter the shape of the burner hole.
It is necessary to dry completely after washing
After cleaning, wash the burner and ring thoroughly with clean water. After this, wipe them with a cloth and let them dry completely. Putting a wet burner on the stove immediately may cause ignition problems.
Other parts of the stove can also be cleaned with a microfiber cloth and mild cleaning solution. If you have a glass-topped stove, do not use steel wool or a very rough scrubber, as this may scratch the surface.
Avoid these mistakes while cleaning
Do not attempt to clean a hot burner.
Do not pour too much water on the ignition part.
Do not scrape the burner holes with a pin, knife or needle.
Avoid using cleaners that contain very strong chemicals or bleach.
Do not reinstall the cleaned burner until it is completely dry.
How often should the burner be cleaned?
If food is cooked daily in the house then it is better to wipe the surface of the stove every day. Cleaning the burner cap and ring can be done once a week. Doing a little deep cleaning once a month will keep the burnt-on dirt from building up.
If the gas flame continues to appear yellow or uneven even after cleaning, there is difficulty in ignition or a gas smell is felt, do not ignore it as a mere problem of dirt. In such a situation, it would be safe to stop the gas supply and get it checked by an authorized gas service or a qualified technician.
