Young Indian weightlifting sensation and Commonwealth Games silver medallist Gyaneshwari Yadav is leaving no stone unturned in her quest for glory. With the 2026 Asian Games set to kick off in Japan on September 19, Gyaneshwari is shifting her focus entirely toward capturing the gold medal in the highly competitive women’s 53 kg weight category. Drawing from her extensive international experience—including two prestigious medals at the Asian Championships—the gritty athlete is fine-tuning her technique, physical conditioning, and mental resilience. In an exclusive interview with sports journalist Shekhar Jha, Gyaneshwari opens up about her rigorous training routine, the lessons learned from past podium finishes, and her unwavering determination to make India proud.
Harnessing Commonwealth Games Experience for Asian Dominance
Reflecting on her preparations, Gyaneshwari shared that winning a medal at the Commonwealth Games served as a massive turning point in her career, providing the self-belief needed to tackle even tougher international fields.
“Winning a medal at the Commonwealth Games has inspired me immensely, and I’m using that experience to prepare even better for the Asian Games,” she explained. “My main focus right now is improving my strength, technique, consistency, and fitness. I’m also working on maintaining a strong mindset and staying disciplined during my training. My goal is to continually improve with each training session and perform at my best when competing for India.”
Rather than feeling intimidated by the prospect of facing the world’s elite lifters in Asia, she views her past international exposure as an invaluable asset. “Winning a medal at the CWG has definitely boosted my confidence. It’s given me the assurance that when I focus on my goals and apply what I’ve learned in training, I can perform well at a major international tournament. Furthermore, this experience has taught me that there’s always room for improvement. I’m taking those lessons positively and feeling more experienced and better prepared than ever before.”
Strategy and Mindset for the Upcoming Asian Showdown
When asked about her prospective rivals and tactical strategies on the competition platform, Gyaneshwari maintained a grounded and disciplined approach, choosing to prioritize personal execution over opponent comparisons.
“Some of Asia’s strongest weightlifters will be participating in the Asian Games, so I respect every competitor,” she noted. “I don’t want to focus too much on individual names or comparisons. My strategy will be to focus on my own performance, execute each lift with confidence, and maintain composure under pressure. I will rely on the technical aspects we’ve worked on during training and take things one lift at a time. If I can perform to my potential, I believe I have a strong chance of achieving a good result.”
Turning National Expectations into Positive Energy
With weightlifting drawing increasingly high expectations from Indian sports fans across the country, managing competitive pressure is a crucial part of an elite athlete’s journey. However, for Gyaneshwari, representing the tricolor serves as a source of motivation rather than anxiety.
“For me, representing India is a matter of pride rather than pressure,” she asserted passionately. “Expectations motivate me to work harder and give my best. I know many people support and believe in me, and I want to turn their support into positive energy. Winning a medal at the Asian Games would be a significant milestone in my career, but my goal is to focus on the process rather than putting unnecessary pressure on myself. I hope I can make my country, my family, my coaches, and everyone who supports me proud on competition day.”
