In the semi-final match of Duleep Trophy against Central Zone, a very historic scene was seen on the field. After East Zone’s regular captain Ishan Kishan suddenly got injured and left the field, just 15-year-old young star cricketer Vaibhav Suryavanshi was made the acting captain of the team. When Vaibhav took over the responsibility of captaincy in the 19th over of the first innings of Central Zone, a smiling confidence could be clearly seen on his face.
Ishan Kishan got injured
The incident occurred when East Zone captain Ishan Kishan, who was keeping wickets, was hit by a fast ball on his right wrist. Ishan, who was writhing in pain, had to immediately seek help from the physio and after first aid, he had to leave the field for further treatment. Later, Ishan was seen with a bandage on his hand while the responsibility of wicketkeeping was taken over by his Jharkhand teammate Kumar Kushagra.
East Zone team bowling first
Talking about the match, East Zone won the toss and decided to bowl first. Tripura’s fast bowler Abhijeet Sarkar bowled lethally in the initial overs itself, dismissing Central Zone’s opening batsman Aman Mokhade (8) and Kunal Chandela (6), due to which the Central Zone team captained by Rajat Patidar lost its 2 important wickets for 36 runs.
Captaining the senior team for the first time
This is the first time that Vaibhav Suryavanshi has been seen captaining a senior men’s team. This is only the 10th first-class and second Duleep Trophy match for Vaibhav, who made his youngest debut in first-class cricket through Ranji Trophy in the beginning of the year 2024. Earlier this month, when Vaibhav was appointed the vice-captain of East Zone, the selectors’ decision was much debated.
In the victory against North East Zone in the first round of Duleep Trophy, Vaibhav Suryavanshi could not perform much with the bat and was out after scoring only 8 runs in the first innings. But he showed his versatility and took 2 wickets with the ball and played an important role in the team’s innings victory.
