Kolkata, Aug 29:
Police have registered FIRs against Trinamool Congress national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee and two others following a confrontation at the party’s headquarters in Kolkata, with 13 people arrested in connection with the incident.
The confrontation reportedly took place at the TMC office amid tensions surrounding the party’s internal organisational activities.
Police registered cases after a clash involving party workers and private security personnel at the premises. The incident led to heightened security around the party office.
The FIRs name Abhishek Banerjee along with two others in connection with the confrontation. Police have also detained and arrested several people allegedly involved in the violence.
The incident has added to the political tensions in West Bengal, where the ruling Trinamool Congress is preparing for an increasingly intense electoral battle.
Police officials are examining CCTV footage and other evidence to establish the sequence of events and identify the individuals involved in the confrontation.
The arrests are likely to trigger a political reaction from the TMC, particularly as the party has repeatedly accused the BJP of using central agencies and police machinery to target its leaders and workers.
The BJP, on the other hand, has been sharply critical of the TMC government and its leadership over law-and-order issues.
The latest incident comes at a politically sensitive time in West Bengal, with both parties stepping up their organisational activities ahead of the next Assembly election.
Further investigation is underway to determine the precise circumstances that led to the confrontation and the role of each of those named in the cases.
