Manchester United could miss out on Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta, with the Red Devils needing a major squad change before they can seriously pursue the forward. Palace are asking for a substantial transfer fee for the French striker, something Aston Villa have already discovered.

According to CaughtOffside, Unai Emery’s side put forward an offer worth £20 million, but the Selhurst Park club rejected it immediately.

United remain in the background in this situation and would only be able to meet Palace’s valuation if either Joshua Zirkzee or Marcus Rashford leaves on a permanent deal.

“Aston Villa have stepped up their efforts in the closing stages of the summer transfer window, submitting a £20m bid for Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta.

“Villa’s initial £20m offer was well below Crystal Palace’s expectations. The situation could invite other clubs to make their move. Names mentioned by well-placed sources in the industry include Manchester United, Tottenham and Galatasaray.

“Manchester United’s stance is more measured. Mateta’s representatives offered the player to Old Trafford, but United will not act unless room is made in the squad. Unless Marcus Rashford or Joshua Zirkzee leaves, the club will not lodge an official bid.”
