The results for the Uttar Pradesh Teacher Eligibility Test (UPTET) 2026 have been declared. This exam was also taken by teachers who were already employed in government service without having previously cleared the TET. The Supreme Court had issued an order making it mandatory for serving teachers to pass the TET. Following this order, teachers who had secured employment without passing the exam also appeared for the UPTET 2026. According to the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission (UPESSC), a total of 1,22,405 teachers took the UPTET 2026 Primary Level exam; of these, 93,387 passed, resulting in a pass percentage of 76.29%. Meanwhile, at the Upper Primary Level, 1,46,394 serving teachers took the exam, with 1,13,384 qualifying—a pass percentage of 77.45%.
Will 62,000 teachers lose their jobs?
Teachers who failed the UPTET 2026 are now wondering if they might lose their government jobs. However, the Supreme Court has set a deadline of August 31, 2028, for serving teachers to pass the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). This means that teachers who did not pass this time still have an opportunity; they can take the exam anytime until 2028. Nevertheless, failure to pass the exam by the deadline will result in the loss of their jobs.
A separate exam to be conducted
Following the Supreme Court's order, teachers across several states staged protests, demanding the withdrawal of the directive. Teachers in Uttar Pradesh also expressed their dissatisfaction with the order, prompting the state government to make a significant decision regarding the matter. According to the decision, a separate UPTET (TET) examination will be conducted for teachers who are already employed.
A few months ago, State Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed the Uttar Pradesh Education Service Selection Commission to organize a separate TET exam for currently employed teachers; work on this is currently underway. Conducting a separate exam for school teachers will reduce competition and make it easier to pass the test.
