A new chapter starts in South Florida

Inter Miami have moved decisively in an attempt to halt their recent downturn by appointing former Valencia and Inter Milan winger Kily Gonzalez as their new head coach. The club announced the decision on Thursday, confirming that Gonzalez will replace Hoyos, who had been in charge on a permanent basis after a successful interim spell. The change comes with the Herons enduring a five-match winless streak.

The club issued an official statement to explain the transition, making it clear that the new coach is not yet ready to be on the touchline. “Inter Miami CF announced today that it has reached an agreement with Cristian Alberto ‘Kily’ Gonzalez to become the Club’s new First Team head coach,” the statement said. “Gonzalez will officially assume his duties once he receives the corresponding work permits. Guillermo Hoyos will provisionally continue in charge of the team until the arrival of the new head coach and his coaching staff.”

Reunited with a former team-mate

One of the most interesting elements of the appointment is Gonzalez’s existing bond with club captain Messi. The pair were team-mates for Argentina in 2005 and shared the field in World Cup qualifiers against Peru and Uruguay. That familiarity has become a recurring pattern for the franchise, with every manager appointed during the Argentine star’s time in MLS having had a previous connection with Messi.

Although that personal understanding is obvious, the 52-year-old arrives with a managerial CV that has attracted some scrutiny. He has previously managed Argentine top-flight clubs Rosario Central, Union de Santa Fe and Platense, but is still waiting to win a major trophy as a coach. His reputation as a player, however, is beyond doubt, having built an impressive career in Europe with Zaragoza and Valencia in La Liga before making a high-profile move to Serie A giants Inter Milan.

The end of the Hoyos chapter

Hoyos leaves the head coach’s role after a stint that began under transitional circumstances. Initially the club’s sporting director, he stepped in as interim manager in April after replacing Javier Mascherano. His early influence was clear, as he produced the most successful start of any coach in the club’s history.

The club also thanked him for his contribution in the official announcement, saying: “Inter Miami would like to especially highlight and thank Hoyos for his commitment and full dedication to the Club, demonstrated by his willingness to assume the role during this period, which began last April.” Although results later dipped, Hoyos played an important part in keeping the side competitive in the Eastern Conference.

The timing of the switch indicates that Inter Miami’s hierarchy believed a fresh viewpoint was required to prevent a late-season slide.
