American Artificial Intelligence (AI) company OpenAI has announced the expansion of ‘ChatGPT Ads’ in India. India is one of the company’s biggest markets and the move comes as it seeks to boost earnings from its popular chatbot ahead of the proposed initial public offering (IPO).
It will be rolled out to adult users logging in on the Free and Go tier. ChatGPT’s Go tier plan in India is priced at Rs 399 per month. Sponsored products or services featured in advertisements will appear below ChatGPT’s responses.
The company said that these ads will be clearly labeled and displayed separately from ChatGPIT responses.
Paid subscribers in the Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise and Education tiers will continue to receive ad-free service as before.
OpenAI said that users’ chats, chat history, memories or personal information will not be available to advertisers, as the company does not sell users’ data to advertisers. Instead, advertisers will be provided with aggregated information about campaign performance, such as the number of times an ad was shown and the number of clicks.
OpenAI also said that ads will not be served on accounts where the user identifies themselves as being under the age of 18, or where the company determines that the user is a minor. Apart from this, ads will also not be shown with answers to sensitive or regulated topics like health, mental health or politics.
OpenAI reported that ads from more than 50 brands are expected to go live this week. The company also plans to launch the self-service feature of ChatGPT Ad Manager in India from September 4. Brands will be able to run ad campaigns with budgets starting from Rs 725 per day.
Earlier this month, ChatGPT’s global weekly user base crossed 1 billion. As of February 2026, India remained its second largest market, with more than 100 million weekly users including students, developers, teachers and enterprises.
Open AI first announced plans to begin testing ads within ChatGPTT in January 2026. Its objective was to diversify sources of income and accelerate expansion.
The advertising pilot program began in the US in February. It crossed the $100 million annualized revenue mark within six weeks of launch. After this it was expanded to Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Britain, Mexico, Brazil, Japan and South Korea.
Last week, OpenAI launched ChatGPAT ads in 31 European countries, including Germany, France, Spain, and Italy.
