Yoga is an effective method to establish balance between body, mind and soul. It is not just physical exercise, but an art of living, which makes a person calm, strong and concentrated from within. Vrischikasana holds a special place among the various asanas of yoga, the practice of which improves mental balance and body control.
Its name is derived from 'Vrischika' i.e. scorpion, because the position of the body during this asana is similar to that of a scorpion. Its practice provides physical strength, flexibility and mental peace.
The Ministry of AYUSH, Government of India has described Vrischikasana as an advanced level yoga asana. By doing this regularly, there is a wonderful combination of strength, balance and flexibility in the body. In this posture the shape of the body becomes like a scorpion with its sting raised.
Vrischikasana or Scorpion Pose is an inverted backbend asana, in which the legs are bent towards the head while balancing on the elbows. This asana strengthens the shoulders, arms, back and core muscles.
Experts say that this increases the flexibility of the spine, which provides relief from back pain and back problems. Additionally, it stretches the abdominal muscles, improves the digestive system and supplies energy to the body. Vrischikasana also increases concentration and balance.
This is a very difficult asana. This should be attempted only if you are adept at Pincha Mayurasana. However, beginners should practice near a wall to maintain balance and if possible, do it under the supervision of a yoga teacher.
At the same time, avoid doing this asana if you have high blood pressure, heart disease, dizziness or serious injury to the neck and back. Regular practice of this asana strengthens the muscles of the body and can also increase mental concentration and self-confidence. However, it is a difficult asana, so it should be done with proper guidance and caution.
