Liverpool transfer latest: Move for highly-rated youngster ruled out, with Manchester City among interested clubs

Liverpool are still looking to bring in another couple of additions before the transfer window shuts.

Liverpool have reportedly been handed a “zero per cent chance” of signing a leading young talent they had been linked with earlier in this transfer window.

The Reds have made an uneven start to life under Andoni Iraola, rescuing a late point at St. James' Park on Sunday. But despite concerns around their defensive midfield, big-money signing Florian Wirtz and both full-backs, it seems Liverpool are also pursuing another winger.

A move for Yankuba Minteh is said to be close, while Bradley Barcola has been linked throughout the window. However, one highly rated wonderkid defensive midfielder now appears to be out of the picture.

Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher was heavily critical of his former club's opening-weekend draw with Newcastle United, pointing to Ryan Gravenberch's positioning and saying Dominik Szoboszlai does not have the “discipline” to operate in a double-pivot midfield.

“I think Liverpool do need someone alongside Gravenberch,” Carragher said, before adding, “It doesn't necessarily have to be a player who can't get on the ball, who's just tackling and stopping players.

“If you play for one of the top teams in the world, like Liverpool are, you need to be able to get hold of the ball: but I want someone in [the midfield] who can run, and I just think Szoboszlai has to go to the no.10.”

According to Colombian journalist Pipe Sierra, that player will not be Matias Orozco, who has now been ruled out of a switch to Anfield.

The Barranquilla-born deep-lying playmaker broke into the Deportivo Cali first team last season, with local outlet VBar Caracol reporting that the 18-year-old had been close to making the move to Merseyside.

That update now appears to have been premature, at least regarding Liverpool's interest, with Bournemouth, Crystal Palace, Newcastle United, Everton, Aston Villa, Fulham and Manchester City all said to be monitoring the youngster.

Manchester City have also just completed a deal for another South America-based wonderkid, Palmeiras winger Allen, according to the BBC.

Leeds United and Brentford had also been mentioned as possible destinations for Orozco.

The Colombia youth international is valued at €1.4m, according to Transfermarkt. Liverpool face Nottingham Forest when Premier League action resumes next weekend.
