Tottenham Hotspur have agreed in principle to sell club captain Cristian Romero to Atletico Madrid. The move represents a major change for the North London club as they get ready to part company with one of their most important, yet often divisive, defenders.

Atletico Madrid land a long-term defensive target

Diego Simeone has at last got his man, with Atletico Madrid reaching an agreement in principle with Tottenham to sign Romero, according to Sky Sports. The package for the Argentina international is believed to be worth around £34.2 million, with further add-ons linked to performance. Spurs have also safeguarded their future interest by including a 15 per cent sell-on clause in the final transfer terms.

The Spanish heavyweights have admired the Argentina defender for a long time, and it became increasingly apparent during the transfer window that Spurs were willing to sell their captain if the right offer arrived. Romero first joined the North London side on a season-long loan from Atalanta in the summer of 2021, before Tottenham made the move permanent the following year.

Romero opts for Madrid over Premier League rivals

The centre-back had always preferred a switch to Atletico Madrid, despite drawing serious interest from top clubs around Europe. Inter Milan wanted to bring the former Atalanta player back to Serie A, while Tottenham's North London rivals Arsenal were also strongly linked with a surprise move for him.

His departure comes even though Romero's Spurs contract was due to run until the summer of 2029, bringing to a close a spell in North London in which the defender helped Tottenham win silverware by lifting the 2024-25 Europa League.

A fiery legacy left in North London

Romero's spell in the Premier League will be remembered for both his outstanding technical ability and his disciplinary issues. Although he was sent off twice last season during Spurs' Premier League relegation battle, the 28-year-old remained central to the club's fight to stay up, making 32 appearances in all competitions and contributing six goals and four assists in a campaign that tested everyone connected with the club.

Over five seasons in North London, Romero made 124 appearances for Spurs and scored 12 goals, while also collecting four Premier League red cards. That aggressive, high-intensity style made him a favourite with many supporters, even if it also frustrated others at times.

Overcoming friction with the Spurs faithful

The bond between Romero and the fans was not entirely smooth. He came in for strong criticism after appearing prepared to attend his boyhood club Belgrano's Argentine Primera Division Apertura final against River Plate, instead of being there for Tottenham's crucial final-day meeting with Everton.

However, the defender did go on to feature at the last game of the season, where Spurs secured Premier League survival. With his future now set to be in Madrid, the Argentine departs leaving behind a complicated legacy at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
