If you are planning to do any important work to the bank in the coming days, you need to be careful. Bank unions have warned of going on a nationwide strike on September 11 due to non-resolution of their outstanding demands. The move is being led by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), protesting against the government’s ‘negative attitude’.
Main cause and demands of the strikeThis strike is not limited to just one issue. There are many old and important demands of bank employees and officers which are not yet resolved.
5-Day Banking: Permission to work five days a week has been sought for a long time. The proposal has been pending from the government for the past two years, despite the approval for this by the IBA.
Similarities in PLI Scheme: The Union is protesting that the Performance Linked Incentive (PLI) scheme is giving disproportionate benefits to officers in Scale-IV and above.
Revision of Pension: Demand for pension updation for old pensioners and option to return to Old Pension Scheme (OPS) to employees coming under National Pension System (NPS).
What will be the impact on consumers? If there is a strike on September 11, it will directly affect the common consumers. September 11 is a Friday, followed by another consecutive Saturday and Sunday holiday. As Ganesh Chaturthi is a holiday on September 14 in some states, operations of state-run banks may be disrupted for four consecutive days. Check clearance, cash deposit-withdrawal and other branch-based operations can be greatly impacted.
Warning of future strikesThe union has made it clear that if their demands are not met, the agitation will intensify. UFBU has given an ultimatum that there will be another three-day strike from September 28 at the time of half-yearly account closing. If there is no solution, an indefinite strike will be started from October 26.
It will be important to see what stance the government and bank management take on this issue in the coming days. Until then, customers are advised to make maximum use of online banking and digital media.
