Lucknow. All the political parties are busy in their preparations for the Uttar Pradesh Assembly Elections-2027. Meanwhile, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) has also started trying to open its political account in the state. The party’s first priority is alliance, but if no consensus is reached on seat sharing, AIMIM is preparing to contest the elections alone.
Understanding the electoral importance of Uttar Pradesh, AIMIM chief Asaduddin Owaisi is paying special attention to those assembly constituencies where Muslim voters are in a position to influence the election results. Owaisi himself has toured from western Uttar Pradesh to Bahraich in the Terai region and taken stock of the party’s prospects. At present, the party has increased its activities in many assembly seats of Prayagraj, Bahraich, Saharanpur, Moradabad, Rampur and Amroha. In these areas, emphasis is being laid on strengthening the organization up to the booth level.
Alliance is the first choice, if things don’t work out then elections will be held alone.
The party is trying to strengthen its political base before the elections in such areas where the number of Muslim voters can affect the electoral equations. The picture regarding the alliance is not clear yet. In such a situation, AIMIM has kept its options open. According to party leaders, if there is no alliance with any party, then AIMIM can prepare to contest elections on about 200 to 250 assembly seats on its own.
Gain from 2023 civic elections
Senior political analyst Virendra Singh Rawat says that AIMIM got an opportunity to strengthen its political base through its performance in the 2023 civic elections in Uttar Pradesh. Many candidates of the party had registered their presence by winning the local body elections. Now AIMIM is working on a strategy to take this local election success to the assembly elections.
SP’s electoral equation may be affected
According to Virendra Singh Rawat, in many parts of Western Uttar Pradesh, Awadh and Purvanchal, the role of Muslim voters is considered important in terms of election results. In such a situation, if AIMIM is successful in increasing its support base in these areas, then its impact may not be limited only to its vote percentage, but may also affect the electoral equation of Samajwadi Party. However, AIMIM’s performance in the last assembly elections has not been impressive and the party has not been able to open its account in the assembly so far.
Fear of division of opposition votes
According to senior political analyst Hujjat Raza, in the politics of Uttar Pradesh, if Owaisi’s AIMIM contests the elections outside the alliance, then its effect may mainly come in the form of division of opposition votes, which will likely benefit BJP. At the same time, if the SP-Congress led opposition alliance takes AIMIM along, then the electoral picture may be different and the opposition may benefit from it.
Also keep an eye on ‘Bhim-Mim’ equation
Hujjat Raza said that possible coordination with leaders and parties like Chandrashekhar Azad and Pallavi Patel is also being seen from the perspective of ‘Bhim-Meem’ equation. However, it is too early to reach any concrete conclusion regarding the possibility of fielding a face to Atiq Ahmed’s family.
Waiting for the picture to become clear till September
AIMIM Central Zone President Sheikh Tahir Siddiqui said that the party is making full preparations with the aim of opening its account in the 2027 assembly elections. He said that the party is in favor of an alliance with all opposition parties with respectable share to stop the BJP.
Be it the possibility of an alliance with BSP or the option of contesting elections with Chandrashekhar Azad and other parties, the party’s aim is to stop the BJP, he said. According to Sheikh Tahir Siddiqui, if the picture regarding alliance is not clear by September, then AIMIM will prepare to contest elections on 200 to 250 seats in Uttar Pradesh. Preparations are going on till the booth level of the party and applications are being received continuously from the entire state to contest the elections.
