On Thursday, the Office of Defects Investigation (ODI) under the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said it has launched an engineering analysis into ongoing consumer complaints about engine failures occurring even after recall-related repairs in vehicles powered by General Motors’ 6.2-litre V-8 engine, internally designated L87. ODI has now expanded the scope of its inquiry beyond what was covered under Recall 25V-274, and the investigation now spans a possible population of 997,743 GM vehicles.
The fresh investigation follows 499 complaints received by ODI in which owners reported engine failure after their vehicles had already undergone the repair procedure required under Recall 25V-274. That recall covered 2021–2026 GM vehicles fitted with the 6.2-litre L87 V-8 engine, which General Motors said was affected by supplier-related manufacturing and quality problems. The list includes high-volume models such as the Chevrolet Silverado, Suburban and Tahoe, Cadillac Escalade, and GMC Sierra and Yukon. In simple terms, these are some of GM’s most popular products—and among its most significant profit contributors.
General Motors had adopted a two-part remedy for that recall, saying customers would either be given an oil change to a different viscosity or a complete engine replacement, depending on the outcome of a dealer inspection. Out of the ODI complaints, 473 alleged that the engine failed after the oil-viscosity change, while 26 vehicles reportedly suffered another failure even after receiving a full engine replacement. In addition, ODI has also logged another 191 complaints involving failed L87 engines that were not included in the original recall. NHTSA also said that GM itself reported receiving 6953 complaints of post-remedy engine failure.
As a result, ODI will now start examining L87 engines produced outside the March 1, 2021 to May 31, 2024 build window that was covered by Recall 25V-274. With GM now offering a next-generation small-block engine in both 5.7-litre and 6.7-litre forms, it would not be surprising if the L87 is phased out of its present applications sooner rather than later.
