The epic rivalry between Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo isn't just limited to the football pitch. It seems the competition is just as fierce in the auction house. In a recent auction, Messi has once again left Ronaldo trailing behind.
Messi vs Ronaldo Jersey Auction
A signed jersey that Messi wore while playing for Barcelona was auctioned for a massive $66,107. In Indian rupees, that's about ₹55 lakh! At the same auction, a jersey belonging to Ronaldo sold for just $10,601, which is roughly ₹8.8 lakh. That's more than six times less than what Messi's jersey fetched.
Both these jerseys were from the personal collection of Rod Thornley, a massage therapist for Manchester United. He was the one who put them up for auction.
Jerseys Over a Decade Old
The Messi jersey that sold for a fortune was worn by him during a friendly match in August 2012, when Barcelona played against Manchester United. The game ended in a goalless draw. After the match, Messi signed the jersey and handed it to Thornley.
Apparently, Thornley had asked Barcelona's then-player Gerard Piqué even before the match to get Messi's jersey for him. Once the game was over, Piqué took him to the Barcelona dressing room. There, Messi took off the jersey he was wearing, signed it, gave it to Thornley, and even shook his hand.
Ronaldo's Jersey
On the other hand, Ronaldo's jersey was from his 2014-15 season with Real Madrid. It was meant to be worn for a match, but he didn't end up wearing it. Later, Ronaldo gifted the jersey to Thornley with a personal message.

Having worked with Manchester United for a long time, Thornley had the amazing opportunity to collect jerseys and memorabilia from some of the world's best football players. These Messi and Ronaldo jerseys are just a small part of his massive collection. Now, a couple of these prized possessions have been auctioned off.
This historic auction took place on MatchWornShirt, a popular auction website for sports memorabilia. Apart from the Messi and Ronaldo jerseys, Rod Thornley also auctioned off several jerseys from Manchester United's legendary ‘Class of 92’ players.
