Steve Smith was warned by the umpires after becoming involved in a verbal exchange with Bangladesh players during Australia's innings on the opening day of the Test.

The incident occurred in the ninth over after Bangladesh pacer Taskin Ahmed struck Smith on the pad. Bangladesh appealed for lbw, but umpire Nitin Menon turned down the appeal.

As Taskin tried to convince captain Najmul Hossain Shanto to review the decision, Smith became involved in the discussion.

Steve Smith Tells Bangladesh To Review LBW Decision

Smith appeared confident that the delivery was not going to hit the stumps and was heard explaining his assessment during the appeal.

"I'm halfway down the wicket to him, it's going miles over," Smith was heard saying.

The Australia batter then appeared to encourage Bangladesh to use their review.

"Go for it," Smith said as Shanto continued discussing the decision with Taskin.

The Bangladesh captain ultimately decided against taking the review, leaving Menon's original decision unchanged.

The exchange did not end there, however.

Both on-field umpires subsequently approached Smith and appeared to warn the Australian batter about his involvement in the conversation.

Smith listened before nodding his head. He appeared puzzled by the intervention, with a confused expression on his face as the umpires spoke to him.

Play then resumed without further incident.

Smith's Competitive Approach Comes Under Spotlight Again

The moment quickly became another talking point during a tense contest between Australia and Bangladesh.

Smith has frequently attracted attention for his intense approach on the field, with his interactions with opposition players and officials occasionally becoming part of the wider discussion around his performances.

On this occasion, the Australian batter's involvement was unusual because he appeared to be encouraging the opposition captain to review an lbw decision against him.

The incident also highlighted the importance of players leaving decisions involving the review system to the fielding side and officials.

For Bangladesh, Shanto's decision not to review the delivery meant the original lbw call stood. For Smith, the exchange ended with an umpire's warning rather than any further punishment, but it provided another memorable moment from the opening day.
