Weather Today August 22, 2026: A fresh spell of active monsoon weather is expected across large parts of India today, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall in several states along with thunderstorms and gusty winds in some regions.

According to the latest IMD forecast, widespread rainfall is likely over parts of northwest, central, eastern and northeastern India on August 22. Heavy to very heavy rain is particularly likely at isolated places over East Madhya Pradesh, while heavy rainfall warnings have also been issued for areas including Bihar, Chhattisgarh, East Uttar Pradesh, Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Odisha, Assam and Meghalaya.

The weather agency has also warned of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds in several parts of the country. Residents have been advised to remain cautious, particularly in places vulnerable to waterlogging, landslides and flash flooding.

What Is Driving the Rainfall?

Several weather systems are currently influencing monsoon activity.

IMD said a low-pressure area was positioned over northeast Madhya Pradesh and adjoining areas, while upper-air cyclonic circulations were present over north Haryana, southwest Madhya Pradesh, south Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Jharkhand, among other regions.

The monsoon trough is also contributing to favourable conditions for widespread rainfall.

These systems are expected to keep the monsoon active over parts of northern and central India, while eastern and northeastern states are also likely to receive significant rainfall during the next few days.

Delhi Weather Today: Rain Likely on August 22

Delhi and neighbouring areas are likely to witness increased rainfall activity today.

IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rain over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi on August 22, with isolated heavy rainfall also possible.

Delhi recently recorded maximum temperatures in the range of 34°C to 36°C and minimum temperatures between 25°C and 28°C.

Cloudy conditions and rainfall could provide temporary relief from humidity, although short periods of intense rain may cause waterlogging and slow traffic in vulnerable areas.

Uttar Pradesh Could See Rain and Thunderstorms

Rainfall activity is also expected across Uttar Pradesh, particularly in the eastern part of the state.

IMD has forecast widespread rain over East Uttar Pradesh from August 22 to August 24, while isolated heavy rainfall is likely in parts of the region.

West Uttar Pradesh may also experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds at isolated locations.

People travelling during periods of intense rain should remain cautious on low-lying roads and stretches prone to water accumulation.

Bihar Under Heavy Rain Warning

Bihar is among the states where rainfall is expected to remain active.

IMD's subdivision-wise warning issued on August 22 places Bihar under a heavy rain warning for August 22, 23, 24 and 25.

The national forecast also indicates fairly widespread to widespread rain over Bihar between August 22 and August 24.

Cities and districts experiencing intense spells could face temporary waterlogging and disruption to road traffic.

The source report contained a reference to Patna reaching 53°C, but this appears to be an error. Its own temperature table lists a much more plausible maximum of around 35°C and minimum of 28°C.

Madhya Pradesh Faces One of the Strongest Rain Warnings

East Madhya Pradesh is one of the key regions to watch today.

IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated places over East Madhya Pradesh on August 22. Rain is also likely to remain widespread across both eastern and western parts of the state during the coming days.

Thunderstorms and lightning are also possible in Madhya Pradesh.

The combination of saturated ground and additional heavy rain may increase the risk of local flooding in vulnerable areas.

Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh Need to Watch Landslide Risk

Rainfall in the Himalayan states remains a concern because even short periods of intense rain can trigger landslides and falling rocks.

IMD has forecast heavy rainfall over Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh on August 22. Uttarakhand is expected to continue seeing rainfall activity through much of the coming week.

People travelling in hill districts should check local road and weather advisories before beginning journeys, particularly on landslide-prone routes.

Jammu and Kashmir Also Included in Heavy Rain Forecast

Parts of Jammu and Kashmir are expected to receive heavy rain on August 22.

The IMD forecast indicates fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad through August 23, with isolated heavy rainfall possible today.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of around 30-40 kmph may also occur at isolated places.

Rajasthan Could See Thunderstorms and Gusty Winds

Both East and West Rajasthan carry thunderstorm-related warnings for August 22.

IMD's subdivision-wise warning shows thunderstorm, lightning and squall-related conditions for Rajasthan today.

The latest district forecast from the Jaipur Meteorological Centre indicates thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching around 30-40 kmph in some districts.

Therefore, the claim that winds will uniformly reach 60-70 kmph across Rajasthan should not be treated as a statewide forecast. Local nowcasts may indicate stronger gusts in individual areas.

Punjab and Haryana Also Likely to Receive Heavy Rain

Punjab, Haryana and Chandigarh are also included in today's heavy rainfall forecast.

IMD expects isolated heavy rainfall over Punjab and Haryana-Chandigarh-Delhi on August 22.

Short-duration intense rain could affect agricultural fields as well as urban areas, making the forecast particularly important for farmers.

West Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha Remain on the Monsoon Radar

Rainfall is expected to remain widespread across eastern India.

Gangetic and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal are likely to see continuing rainfall, while Jharkhand and Odisha are expected to receive widespread rain from August 22 onward.

Heavy rain is possible over Odisha on August 22 and 23, with the possibility of very heavy rainfall increasing during August 24-27. Bihar is also expected to receive heavy rain through August 25.

Assam and Northeast India to Get More Rain

The northeastern states are also likely to remain wet.

IMD has forecast fairly widespread to widespread rainfall over Assam and Meghalaya as well as Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura through August 23. Isolated heavy rain is likely across Assam and Meghalaya during the coming days.

Persistent rainfall can increase the risk of flooding and landslides in vulnerable parts of the Northeast.

Thunderstorms Could Bring Strong Wind Gusts

Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are expected across several regions.

In parts of Andhra Pradesh, North Interior Karnataka and Tamil Nadu-Puducherry-Karaikal, winds could reach 40-50 kmph with gusts up to around 60 kmph. Other regions, including Rajasthan, Jammu and Kashmir, West Uttar Pradesh and parts of Karnataka, may experience gusts of around 30-40 kmph.

This is important because very strong local thunderstorm gusts can damage weak structures, tree branches and temporary shelters.

Farmers and Travellers Should Stay Alert

During thunderstorms, IMD generally advises people to avoid taking shelter under trees, stay away from exposed locations and postpone unnecessary outdoor activity when lightning is nearby.

Farmers may also need to protect harvested crops and avoid working in open fields during intense lightning activity.

People in hilly areas should watch for landslide warnings, while those living near rivers and low-lying areas should stay informed about local water levels.

Rainfall Activity Could Continue Beyond August 22

Today's weather is part of a broader active monsoon phase rather than a one-day event.

IMD expects rainfall to continue over Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, eastern India and parts of the Northeast during the coming days.

The exact intensity can change rapidly, however, particularly during thunderstorms. Residents should therefore follow district-level IMD warnings and short-term nowcasts for the latest information.

For August 22, the key message is clear: heavy rain remains possible across multiple states, with very heavy rain over parts of East Madhya Pradesh and thunderstorm-related wind risks in several regions.

Disclaimer: Weather conditions can change quickly. District-level forecasts and nowcasts should be checked through the India Meteorological Department and local authorities before travel or outdoor activity.
