Iran has warned of a devastating response to new US threats as Washington prepares to unveil what it calls the toughest sanctions in history. The measures come amid falling shipping traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, rising oil prices and concerns over Iran's oil trade with China and the wider impact on Gulf energy supplies.
Tehran, August 21, 2026: Iran on Friday warned that any fresh US threats would draw a “devastating” response after Washington said it planned to impose what it described as the toughest financial penalties in history in an effort to topple the Iranian leadership.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said details of the planned sanctions would be announced on Monday. The move follows President Donald Trump's warning of economic consequences for any country providing “any type of lifeline to Iran.”
The Chief of Staff of Iran's Armed Forces, Major General Ali Abdollahi, said Tehran's response would be broad and decisive.
"With preparedness across land, sea, air, air defence and cyberspace, Iran's armed forces will respond to the enemy's new threats with crushing, punishing and devastating responses," Abdollahi was quoted as saying by Iranian media.
