New Delhi: Congress MP and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi paid an emotional tribute to his mother Sonia Gandhi on the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi, recalling her strength and resilience after his father’s assassination in 1991.
Rahul Gandhi said he had witnessed Sonia Gandhi face every challenge that came her way with “never-ending courage and dignity” after Rajiv Gandhi's death. He also expressed pride that his mother's memoir “Belonging: A Journey of Love” will soon reach millions of readers.
The memoir is scheduled to be released on November 10th and will detail Sonia Gandhi's personal journey, her entry into India's most influential political family, and the experiences that shaped her life.
Rahul Gandhi's Emotional Message for Mother Sonia
Sharing his thoughts on social media, Rahul Gandhi addressed Sonia Gandhi as “Mama” and remembered the difficult years following Rajiv Gandhi's assassination.
“Since the day Papa left, I have watched you face everything life threw at you with never-ending courage and dignity,” Rahul said.
He added that only he and his sister Priyanka Gandhi truly understood the struggles Sonia Gandhi went through after losing her husband. Rahul said he felt proud that the world would soon read his mother's story and understand the woman behind the public figure.
'Papa Would Be Proud': Rahul Recalls Rajiv Gandhi
On Rajiv Gandhi's 82nd birth anniversary, Rahul Gandhi said he believed his father would have been proud of Sonia Gandhi's journey. “Today, on his birthday, I can see Papa smiling and looking down proudly at his beautiful Sonia,” Rahul wrote.
Rajiv Gandhi became Prime Minister of India in 1984 and served until 1989. He was assassinated by a LTTE suicide bomber in Sriperumbudur, Tamil Nadu, in 1991. At the time of Rajiv Gandhi's assassination, Rahul Gandhi was 20 years old.
Priyanka Gandhi Also Pays Tribute
Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also shared a heartfelt message for her mother, describing Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi's relationship as one of the greatest love stories.
She said her father would have been proud of Sonia Gandhi for writing her life story with “heart and honesty.” Priyanka described Sonia Gandhi as a brave, compassionate and strong woman who remained committed to her family despite facing immense personal challenges.
