Health Desk. Kidneys perform many important functions including removing excess water and waste materials from the body. When kidney function gradually decreases, the symptoms may be very common in the beginning, so people often ignore them. However, there are some changes which need to be taken care of in time.
1. Frequent urination or changes in urination
Kidney problems may cause changes in urination habits. Waking up frequently at night to urinate, unusual changes in urine volume, or the appearance of foam in the urine may be warning signs in some cases.
2. Swelling on legs and face
Kidneys remove excess fluid from the body. When its functionality is affected, water can accumulate in the body, causing swelling to appear especially around the feet, ankles, hands or eyes.
3. Constant fatigue and weakness
As kidney disease progresses, you may feel constant fatigue, weakness or lack of energy. Due to poor kidney function, accumulation of waste products in the body and problems like anemia can also increase fatigue.
4. Loss of appetite and nausea
If kidney function is significantly affected, waste products may increase in the body. This may be accompanied by problems like loss of appetite, nausea or vomiting. If such symptoms persist, you should consult a doctor.
5. Itching and dryness of skin
As kidney disease progresses, some people may experience dry skin along with persistent itching. However, there can be many other reasons for itching, so it alone cannot be considered a sign of kidney failure.
6. Shortness of breath or trouble sleeping
In case of serious kidney problems, accumulation of excess fluid in the body can cause shortness of breath. Some people may also experience trouble sleeping or restlessness at night.
