Amazon founder is part of a consortium close to finalising a deal for the Premier League giants.
Jeff Bezos is nearing an agreement to purchase a stake in Liverpool, with an announcement possibly coming as early as this week.
The Amazon founder is part of a consortium headed by businessman Amit Bhatia, which also includes Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin. The group is set to acquire a stake of a little over 30 per cent in the Premier League club.
According to Sky News, Fenway Sports Group (FSG), which has been in control of Liverpool since 2010, is preparing to confirm the transaction, a move that would bring three hugely wealthy investors into Liverpool’s ownership structure.
Bezos is estimated to have a fortune of more than $280 billion, while Saverin is said to be worth upwards of $32bn.
Bhatia, meanwhile, is the son-in-law of Indian steel billionaire Lakshmi Mittal and was previously a shareholder in Championship club Queens Park Rangers.
The proposed investment would value Liverpool at about $6 billion, making it one of the largest deals involving a football club.
The consortium’s arrival is likely to spark questions over Liverpool’s long-term ownership. Although the immediate agreement is expected to be for a minority investment, the entry of investors with vast financial firepower is bound to fuel speculation that they could eventually look to take greater control of the club.
FSG bought Liverpool for around £300 million in 2010, when the club was dealing with major financial problems. Since then, Liverpool have won a sixth Champions League title and two Premier League crowns.
FSG, which also owns the Boston Red Sox and the Pittsburgh Penguins, confirmed last month that Bhatia’s consortium had shown interest in making a strategic minority investment.
A spokesperson for FSG said: “An investment consortium led, managed, and represented by Amit Bhatia has expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in Liverpool Football Club.”
