The Delhi Metro has received nearly 20,000 complaints of lost items in the past two years. A Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) official said a total of 19,491 lost items were reported in these two financial years.

The DMRC reported that approximately 70 percent of lost items were returned to their owners. Most complaints are filed at metro stations. Passengers can collect their items from the station where they were found, or contact the lost and found office at Kashmere Gate.

What items were lost the most?

The most commonly lost items are lunch boxes, water bottles, umbrellas, earbuds, wristwatches, and backpacks. Passengers can report lost items at any metro station. Announcements are then made over the radio system on trains and stations.

Gold, silver, jewelry, and other valuables are kept at the station for 48 hours. They are then sent to the lost and found office at Kashmere Gate. Unclaimed cash is deposited into the DMRC account after seven days.

What happens to lost mobile phones and laptops?

Electronic items such as mobile phones and laptops are sent for police investigation. If no criminal connection is found, they are destroyed as per regulations. Lost Metro smart cards are returned to the Automatic Fare Collection department after 30 days.

What happens to those who are not claimed by anyone?

DMRC follows a set process for unclaimed items. Tenders are issued every three months for general unclaimed items and non-e-waste. These items are then sent to the Stores Department for auction.
