NEET UG 2026: Guidelines concerning candidates with disabilities regarding NEET UG counseling have been revised. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has amended the rules governing the medical examination and disability certification of 'Persons with Benchmark Disabilities' (PwBD) candidates. These changes modify the earlier guidelines issued on July 27 and aim to ensure a uniform implementation of the disability assessment process during counseling.
Relief for Candidates Holding Temporary PwBD Certificates
The guidelines issued on July 27 required candidates in the PwBD category to possess a permanent certificate—specifically, the Unique Disability Identity Card (UDID)—for MBBS admission. However, the revised guidelines have altered this provision. Candidates will no longer be excluded from the admission process solely on the grounds of holding a temporary disability certificate or a temporary UDID. The Medical Assessment Board will make the final decision regarding the eligibility and disability status of such candidates based on established standards. According to the NMC, candidates with progressive or non-progressive disabilities, or conditions where improvement is unlikely, may undergo a re-assessment by the medical board. Subsequently, the board will determine the candidate's disability status and eligibility under the PwBD quota in accordance with the prescribed procedure.
Amendments to the Counseling Process
These revised guidelines have been issued while the NEET UG 2026 counseling process is underway. The Medical Counseling Committee (MCC) has modified the relevant procedures to implement the new system for PwBD candidates. Changes have also been announced regarding the choice-filling process for Round 1; according to the MCC, the choice-filling process will now commence on August 8, 2026. Candidates are advised to keep a close watch on the official MCC website for the new counseling schedule and other important updates.
MCC Advisory for NRI and OCI Candidates
Amidst the NEET UG 2026 counseling process, the MCC has issued a separate advisory for Overseas Citizen of India (OCI) and NRI candidates. Candidates applying under the NRI quota must first have their documents verified by the MCC’s NRI document verification team. Only after the document verification is complete and eligibility is confirmed will candidates be able to view both NRI quota seats and unreserved seats during the choice-filling process. The MCC has instructed OCI and NRI candidates to select 'Yes' for the option asking if they wish to apply for NRI quota seats during registration and to complete the document verification process before choice-filling begins.
