The late Rajesh Khanna, known as Bollywood’s first “superstar,” was always in the headlines not only for his excellent films but also for his personal life and outspoken statements. His marriage to actress Dimple Kapadia and their subsequent separation were among the most talked-about news in B-town. However, few people know that Rajesh Khanna’s initial relationship with his sister-in-law and Dimple Kapadia’s younger sister, Simple Kapadia, was not very smooth. An old incident is resurfacing on social media, in which Rajesh Khanna flatly refused to cast his sister-in-law, Simple Kapadia, in a film and made extremely harsh and bitter comments about her.

This incident dates back to the 1970s, when Rajesh Khanna was at the peak of his stardom and had just married Dimple Kapadia. At that time, Dimple’s younger sister, Simple Kapadia, was also dreaming of a career as an actress in the Hindi film industry. According to media reports and old film magazines, Dimple Kapadia’s father, Chunibhai Kapadia, wanted Rajesh Khanna to use his influence and connections to get his sister-in-law Simple a break in Bollywood or cast her as a heroine in one of his films.

However, when the offer to cast Simple Kapadia in one of his films was presented to Rajesh Khanna, he flatly rejected it. According to reports, Kaka (Rajesh Khanna) unhesitatingly used extremely harsh words, saying that Simple Kapadia lacked the qualities to be a heroine. He reportedly even said that she looked “ugly” and that casting her would be like portraying “trash” on screen. Rajesh Khanna believed that simply being a family member doesn’t make someone a star, and he wasn’t willing to compromise with his banner or projects.

Despite Rajesh Khanna’s stern refusal, Simple Kapadia didn’t give up. Finally, in 1977, she made her Bollywood debut with the film “Anurodh,” and interestingly, her co-star in the film was her brother-in-law, Rajesh Khanna. However, Simple Kapadia didn’t achieve the same success in acting as her sister, Dimple. Later, Simple left acting and established herself as a highly successful costume designer in Bollywood. She designed dresses for many big stars, including her sister, Dimple Kapadia, and Sunny Deol, and even won a National Award for the 1994 film “Rudali.” Unfortunately, Simple Kapadia passed away at a young age in 2009 due to cancer.
