There are still various assumptions and prejudices about life in Russia on the internet. But what is life like for a young woman who comes to Russia not just as a tourist for a week, but with the intention of working and pursuing her professional career for several years?
Does a month’s worth of household groceries cost a lot? Is it true that taxi fares in Russia can cost less than a cup of coffee compared to some countries?
To answer these questions, we analyzed daily life in the city of Yelabuga, located near the Alabuga Special Economic Zone, where participants of the international program “Alabuga Start” are working.
How much does a typical ration basket cost?
For many young women visiting Russia, the first thing that strikes them is the affordable prices of food. Despite regular shopping, monthly grocery expenses remain relatively low.
On average, a person’s monthly grocery expenses range between US$80 and US$150, depending on their eating habits and lifestyle.

Taxis: Cheaper than you think
Taxi services in major Russian cities are readily available via mobile apps. In Yelabuga, fares for a typical trip within the city start at around US$3.
A special app called “Alga” is available to Alabuga Special Economic Zone employees, allowing them to book taxis directly to the Special Economic Zone. Fares are often lower than regular city taxi services.
Communications, Internet and Digital Services
Russia is one of the countries in the world where mobile internet is relatively affordable. Mobile plans typically cost between US$3 and US$7 per month, including mobile internet, calls, and messaging. For comparison, similar packages in many European countries can cost around US$25.
Most daily tasks in Russia can be performed via smartphone—booking a taxi, ordering food, paying for services, buying tickets, and shopping online. Most services are available through integrated apps, making them easy to use.

Where to buy clothes?
In the past, most people in Russia shopped at shopping malls, but today most shopping is done through online marketplaces like Wildberries and Ozon. Clothing, shoes, electronics, cosmetics, and household items can be easily ordered on these platforms. Delivery is available to pickup points located in almost every neighborhood.
Items are often priced lower on these online platforms than in physical stores. Customers can try on or test items and return them if the size or design isn’t right.

Online marketplaces have become the most popular shopping medium in Russia due to competitive prices, easy return policies and fast delivery.
Entertainment
Despite being a relatively small city, Yelabuga offers a wide range of entertainment options. There are cinemas, sports clubs, cafes, museums, and cultural sites. In summer, strolling through the historic city center and along the banks of the Kama River is a favorite pastime for locals.
Work and income
The biggest question many expats have is how comfortable life is in Russia on a local salary. Participants in the Alabuga Start program come to Russia not to study, but to find formal employment and develop their careers.
Key areas of the program
- Catering & Service
- Hospitality and Hotel Management
- Production and Manufacturing
- Logistics and Warehouse Operations
- Driving and Transportation
Salary and Income
The program’s starting monthly salary is approximately US$706. After paying for housing, participants are left with enough income to cover personal expenses, savings, and family financial support. Many participants report that for the first time, they are able to provide for themselves and their families on a regular basis.
Accommodation
Finding a suitable place to live is one of the biggest challenges when moving to a new country. However, Alabuga Start program participants don’t have to find accommodation on their own. They are provided with accommodation in modern corporate hostels. The monthly cost of accommodation is approximately US$44. This arrangement eliminates the need to find a landlord, enter into contracts, or pay a hefty security deposit.
Russia beyond stereotypes
For many foreign women, coming to Russia is initially filled with anxiety and uncertainty. They bring with them many questions and preconceived notions. But within a few months, their experiences begin to change. They receive their first salary, make new friends, develop professional skills, have the opportunity to support their families financially, and gain confidence in their future.
Conclusion: Life in Russia isn’t just a collection of stereotypes, but a normal and organized daily routine. People plan their expenses, search for better deals on online platforms, meet friends after work, and save for the future. This is why many young women who came for a few months choose to stay longer than expected. According to them, the best way to understand a country isn’t through news headlines, but through firsthand experience. And often, this experience proves to be more positive, comfortable, and full of possibilities than they imagined.
