Fitness, muscular bodies, and six-pack abs are considered the most important signs of good health these days. But a horrifying and dark truth has emerged behind this world of fitness and bodybuilding that has shaken the entire sports world and medical experts. According to health statistics and international fitness reports, 56 professional and amateur bodybuilders have died suddenly worldwide in just the past year. Most shockingly, the average age of these athletes was just 35—the age when a person’s body is at its strongest.
Why are these young athletes, who flaunt their iron nerves, bulging muscles, and zero-fat bodies on stage, so frail from within? What are the reasons behind these young deaths from heart attacks, kidney failure, and sudden cardiac arrest? Let’s learn the harsh and terrifying truth from health experts and sports medicine doctors.
1. Indiscriminate use of anabolic steroids and PEDs
The most common and fatal cause of premature deaths in the bodybuilding industry is the excessive and uncontrolled use of anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS) and performance-enhancing drugs (PEDs). To rapidly increase muscle mass and achieve hypertrophy in a short period of time, many athletes take massive doses of synthetic testosterone, trenbolone, and human growth hormone (HGH).
Left Ventricular Hypertrophy: Steroids not only increase the muscle mass of the arms and legs, but they also abnormally increase the size of the body’s most important muscle, the heart. This causes the heart’s walls to thicken and harden, reducing its pumping capacity and increasing the risk of sudden cardiac arrest.
Increased bad cholesterol: Steroids virtually eliminate good cholesterol (HDL) in the body and drastically increase bad cholesterol (LDL). This can lead to artery blockages at a very young age.
2. Dangerous dehydration and diuretics play a role just before a competition
Before going on stage, bodybuilders squeeze every drop of water out of their bodies to achieve paper-thin skin and highlight every vein in their muscles. To do this, they stop drinking water altogether and resort to water pills or diuretics.
Electrolyte imbalance: Diuretics rapidly remove potassium and sodium from the body. Potassium is an essential mineral for proper heart rhythm. Sudden drops in potassium levels can cause arrhythmias, which can lead to a sudden stoppage of the heart’s beat.
Thickening of blood: Due to severe lack of water in the body, the blood becomes very thick, due to which the heart has to exert excessive force to pump blood and death occurs due to stroke or clot formation.
3. Fat burners, thermogenics, and caffeine overdose
To reduce body fat to 3 to 4 percent, bodybuilders use thermogenic fat burners containing clenbuterol, ephedrine, and a high amount of caffeine. Clenbuterol, originally a lung- medication for horses and cattle, is often mistakenly taken by humans to burn fat.
This drug overstimulates the central nervous system (CNS). This can cause resting heart rates to reach 140 to 160 beats per minute, and blood pressure to rise to dangerous levels. This constant stress can cause athletes’ hearts to stop working while they’re asleep.
4. Dangerous combination of insulin and growth hormone
The use of insulin to achieve massive size has become a new and extremely dangerous trend in modern bodybuilding. Bodybuilders take external insulin injections to rapidly push protein and carbohydrates into their bodies.
Even a small, incorrect dose of insulin can cause severe hypoglycemia, which can lead to a coma or death from brain damage and organ failure. Excessive growth hormone (HGH) intake can cause abnormal enlargement of internal organs (the liver, intestines, and heart), a condition known as visceral obesity or pro-hormone belly.
5. Cardiac stress from heavy weights and overtraining
To increase muscle mass, athletes lift weights far beyond their physical capacity (Extreme Heavy Weightlifting). When a person lifts excessive weight and exerts force while holding their breath (Valsalva Maneuver), the pressure inside the chest increases significantly. This can cause blood pressure to suddenly rise to 250 to 300 mm Hg, which is enough to rupture the heart or brain veins (Aneurysm Rupture).
Why is it important to understand the difference between ‘fitness’ and ‘health’?
Help and sports medicine experts clearly state that “looking fit and muscular on the outside is no guarantee of being healthy on the inside.” The bodies seen on stage are actually the result of extreme malnutrition, dehydration, and excessive use of chemicals.
Fitness: Conforming the body to a particular sport or look (sometimes done in unhealthy ways).
Health: Natural and smooth functioning of all the internal organs of the body (heart, kidney, liver, lungs).
Doctors have a serious warning for young people and gym goers.
These days, even ordinary young gym-goers are taking pro-hormones, steroid shots, and fat-burning supplements without consulting a qualified doctor to achieve overnight cutting and muscular size, just like the influencers and bodybuilders they see on social media. The untimely deaths of 56 bodybuilders in one year is a stark warning to all those young people who risk their lives in pursuit of shortcuts.
Natural bodybuilding, proper balanced nutrition, adequate sleep, and regular cardio are the only paths to longevity and true health. A muscular body built with chemicals and drugs may only provide a temporary glow, but the price is often paid with one’s life.
