Manchester United now seem to have turned their attention towards signing a new left-back at Old Trafford.

United had been expected to push strongly for a third midfielder after completing deals for Andrey Santos and Youri Tielemans.

However, on Tuesday, The Athletic’s Transfer DealSheet reported that United’s staff are weighing up where to allocate their resources next, and it is now “not certain that another player arrives” in midfield.

Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall has now emerged as Manchester United’s preferred option in defence.

With Tyrell Malacia having left the club, Luke Shaw is the only recognised left-back available to Michael Carrick. The United manager is also said to favour Patrick Dorgu in a more advanced role on the left wing.

Hall is regarded as an ideal fit because he brings the athleticism, technical assurance and tactical intelligence required to help United either build from the back or play in a more direct manner.

According to talkSPORT journalist Alex Crook, United remain in pursuit of Hall and are ready to pay as much as £60 million to Newcastle in an attempt to prise the England international away from St James’ Park.

Even so, Newcastle are believed to be under no financial pressure to approve Hall’s departure.

The Magpies have already generated around £250 million through the sales of Anthony Gordon, Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes.

On top of that, Hall still has three years left on his Newcastle contract. That means the player, who is understood to be open to a switch to Old Trafford, has little room to force his current club into a sale.

Crook adds that this is likely to be a “difficult deal” for the Red Devils.

Recently, The Peoples Person also carried a report claiming that United have scouted Atalanta defender Giorgio Scalvini, who is capable of playing in either a back three or a back four.
