Barcelona have completed three striking signings in this summer transfer window, but none has generated more curiosity than Jesse Bisiwu.

The 18-year-old Belgian winger has joined from Club Brugge for an initial fee of around €8.5 million, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal that runs until 2031.

Although the current plan is for him to play regularly for Barça Atletic, he will also train with Hansi Flick’s first team from the very beginning, underlining just how highly the club regard his potential.

So, who exactly is Jesse Bisiwu, and what convinced Barcelona to invest in him?

Born in Belgium and of Ghanaian descent, Bisiwu moved to Club Brugge from Oud-Heverlee Leuven in 2020 and rapidly emerged as one of the country’s most exciting young attacking talents.

His rise gathered pace in remarkable fashion when he signed his first professional contract at only 15 years of age and then made his debut for Club NXT, becoming one of the youngest players ever to feature in Belgium’s professional football system.

Even though he did not make a competitive first-team appearance for Club Brugge, his displays at youth level drew interest from some of Europe’s biggest clubs.

He stood out especially in the UEFA Youth League, where he helped the Belgian side reach the final and displayed the kind of qualities that caught Deco’s attention.

His outings for Belgium’s youth national teams also highlighted the level of promise he possesses.

Bisiwu mainly operates as a left winger, but he is right-footed and naturally prefers to cut inside onto his stronger foot.

He is also comfortable playing on the right, giving coaches important tactical flexibility.

At roughly 1.85 metres tall, he does not match the usual profile of a small, tricky winger.

Instead, he blends notable physical strength with explosive acceleration and long strides, making him very hard to contain once he builds momentum.

His key strengths become clear after watching just a few clips of him in action: top-class one-v-one ability, explosive speed, direct dribbling, fearless attacking intent, the capacity to use either foot in the final third, and strong ball-carrying during transitions.

After joining Barcelona, Bisiwu described himself in these words: “I enjoy playing football. I like having the ball at my feet and taking players on one against one.”

He also said that former Barça star Neymar Jr. was his childhood idol, and identified Raphinha as one of the current Barcelona players he admires the most.

This transfer aligns perfectly with Deco’s recent recruitment strategy.

Instead of focusing on established superstars, Barcelona have put significant faith in high-upside youngsters such as Roony Bardghji, Hamza Abdelkarim, Juwensley Onstein and other emerging prospects who can grow within the club’s system.

Bisiwu brings something Barcelona have sometimes lacked: real explosiveness in wide areas. He is a natural dribbler on the left flank.

The long-term idea of having him and Lamine Yamal on the two wings is an exciting one.

He should fit very well alongside technical players such as Dani Olmo and Pedri in the system, while also offering another solution against low blocks. His physical attributes also appear well suited to Flick’s high-intensity style of football.

The German coach demands aggressive pressing, repeated sprints and quick transitions, all of which are areas where Bisiwu already seems at ease.

In the short term, though, expectations should remain measured. Barcelona view Bisiwu as a long-term investment rather than an immediate starter.

He is expected to be registered with the reserve side, at least for this season, while also being given chances with the first team whenever required.

Even so, at Barcelona, opportunities can come earlier than expected.

Flick has never hesitated to promote young players to the senior side if they are ready, and Bisiwu has already made it clear that he is willing to do whatever the manager asks in order to establish himself.

That mentality, together with his pace, self-belief and enormous ceiling, explains why Barcelona believe they may have secured one of the next breakout stars of Belgian football.
