Strong and healthy-looking bodybuilders are dying suddenly at a young age. Recently, a famous Brazilian fitness influencer shared a photo from the gym on social media, clearly demonstrating his impressive physique; yet, a few hours later, he died suddenly at home. This is not an isolated incident. Many young bodybuilders, including famous athletes from the US, Germany, and Brazil, have previously lost their lives due to causes like heart attacks and cardiac arrest.
The question arises: how can people who appear so fit and strong on the outside suffer such internal health deterioration that they die? In 2025 alone, more than 50 competitive bodybuilders died; most were between 30 and 40 years old, and more than half were due to heart- diseases. This included the famous Punjabi bodybuilder-actor Varinder Singh Khuman, who died of cardiac arrest during shoulder surgery. In December, a rising Brazilian athlete died of a heart attack at just 25 years old—just days after his last competition—while in India, a powerlifter died of a heart attack; he experienced severe chest pain and collapsed shortly after performing a 330-pound bench press and a 770-pound deadlift during a competition. Statistics, research, and autopsy reports provide the answer.
56 Bodybuilders Die in 2025
The year 2025 proved to be a tragic year for the bodybuilding world. According to reports, a total of 56 bodybuilders died that year, with an average age of just 35; more than half of these deaths were due to heart- diseases. 42-year-old bodybuilder Varinder Singh Khuman from Punjab—often called “India’s Arnold Schwarzenegger”—died suddenly due to heart complications during minor surgery. He won the title of ‘Mr. India’ in 2009 and was known for his vegetarian lifestyle.
Around the same time, a 31-year-old Brazilian bodybuilder—who previously held the title of ‘Teen Mr. Australia’—died just weeks after proposing to his girlfriend. A Russian bodybuilder known as the “Russian Hulk” died in May 2025 from multi-organ failure; he had long-term use of synthol injections and suffered from severe ‘bigorexia’ (an obsession with muscle size). Experts now believe that not only steroids, but also contaminated injections, dangerous dehydration, and excessive drug use were major factors in these deaths.
**121 deaths recorded in a study of 20,000 bodybuilders**
A large study published in the *European Heart Journal* in May 2025 highlights the risks associated with bodybuilding. Researchers from the University of Padua, Italy, examined approximately 20,300 athletes who competed in International Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness (IFBB) competitions between 2005 and 2020. Their health was monitored for an average of eight years, until July 2023. A total of 121 deaths were recorded during the study, 46 of which were due to sudden cardiac arrest. The average age of those who died was only 34.7 years. According to the researchers, professional bodybuilders have a five times higher risk of death from sudden cardiac arrest than amateur athletes. According to Dr. Marco Vecchiato, the study’s lead researcher and a sports medicine expert at the University of Padua, many common bodybuilding practices can be detrimental to health. Weight training, excessive diets, rapid weight loss through dehydration, and the use of various performance-enhancing drugs pose significant risks.
What is the cause of the deaths?
Experts attribute these deaths to several factors. The main causes include the use of performance-enhancing drugs (especially anabolic steroids), rapid weight loss before competitions, and excessive strength training. A study by Danish researchers compared approximately 1,189 steroid-using men with approximately 60,000 non-steroid-using men over an 11-year period. The results showed that steroid-using men had a nearly ninefold increased risk of cardiomyopathy (weakening of the heart muscle). The risk of heart attack tripled and the risk of cardiac arrest also tripled. Furthermore, steroids can increase blood pressure, accelerate the accumulation of fat in the arteries, and even alter the heart’s structure. **Heart weight doubled; muscles thickened by up to 125%**
