The notification reportedly states that this information is being requested as part of “upcoming regulations of the Government of India.” However, no official legal or policy announcement has yet been made by the Indian government or WhatsApp’s parent company, Meta.

What is in the notification and why did it come?

According to screenshots circulating on social media, WhatsApp is displaying a pop-up at the top of users’ chat screens, asking them to add their date of birth. This change is believed to be part of preparations to protect children’s data and ensure “verified parental consent” under upcoming policies like India’s Digital Personal Data Protection (DPDP) Act. However, regarding privacy, WhatsApp has clarified that the age or date of birth entered by a user will not be made public and cannot be seen by others.

Will the rules be stricter for younger children?

Australia recently enacted a law banning several social media platforms for children under 16, though WhatsApp is exempt. The Indian government is also considering stricter regulations to protect minors from online fraud, cyberbullying, and addiction. WhatsApp has already begun piloting a parent-managed accounts model for children under 13 in some global markets.

If the new rules are implemented in India, other platforms like Telegram, Instagram, and Snapchat may also be required to make age verification mandatory. Currently, WhatsApp’s prompt is merely a test or self-declaration. Until the government issues a formal notification, it cannot be considered a mandatory rule.
