Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], August 3: The President of the Karate Association of Bengal, Hanshi Premjit Sen, praised India's impressive showing at the Commonwealth Games, emphasizing that the nation's sporting achievements are a reflection of the ongoing support for athletes across various disciplines.

He extended his congratulations to Asmita Dey for securing a gold medal, noting that India's success on the global stage highlights the advancements being made in Indian sports.

India concluded its Commonwealth Games 2026 journey in a commendable fourth place in the overall medal tally, amassing a total of 39 medals.

Dey triumphed in the women's 48kg judo category, overcoming Canada's Heidi Quach in an exhilarating golden score match.

Sen remarked, “India's current prominence in sports is largely due to the unwavering support from our Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Sports Ministry, and the government for athletes across all sports. Whether it’s cricket, football, athletics, or volleyball, India is excelling. Just last month, at the Asian Cadet Championship in Indonesia, a girl athlete won a gold medal for the first time, showcasing the exceptional talent of Indian sportspeople. We also extend our heartfelt congratulations to Asmita for her gold medal at the Commonwealth Games,” he stated.

India wrapped up the Glasgow Games with a total of 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze medals, representing a 122-member team. This achievement mirrors the fourth-place finish from Birmingham four years prior, despite a significantly reduced program that omitted several sports where India typically excels.

While the medal count was lower than the 61 medals earned in Birmingham in 2022, the circumstances provide a different perspective. Notably, 30 of those medals were from sports that were not included in the Glasgow program.

With a contingent of only 122 athletes compared to 210 in the previous Games, India still managed to secure its fourth-place standing while achieving a higher medal conversion rate, with 38 athletes returning home with medals. Long-distance runner Gulveer Singh was the standout performer, being the only Indian to win two medals.
