Assam Flood Relief: If you are a resident of Assam, this news is crucial for you. The state government has taken a significant decision to provide financial assistance to farmers and landowners affected by the recent severe floods in Assam. Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that land tax would be waived for one year for the people of Sivasagar and Charaideo districts; in other words, they are not required to pay land tax for the next year. What is Land Tax?

Land tax is a levy collected by the government from landowners. It applies to agricultural land, residential land, and other types of land. In this context, the Assam government has decided to waive land tax for one year to provide relief to farmers and landowners in Sivasagar and Charaideo, the districts worst hit by the floods. This exemption will come into effect on April 1st.

How much of the electricity bill will be waived?

The Chief Minister has decided to waive the electricity bills for the month of July for domestic consumers in these two districts. This applies specifically to those whose monthly consumption is less than 300 units.

Those consuming up to 300 units of electricity will not have to pay the bill.
Users with prepaid meters will receive a free recharge equivalent to 300 units.

What relief will landowners and farmers get?

The land tax waiver will reduce the financial burden on farmers and landowners. It will provide some relief, particularly regarding the losses to crops and property caused by the floods. Additionally, the government has held meetings with insurance companies and directed them to settle claims from residents of the flood-affected districts of Sivasagar, Charaideo, Jorhat, and Golaghat quickly and easily, ensuring the public faces no inconvenience.

The number of documents required for claims will be reduced.
Nodal officers will be appointed in each district.
A 24x7 helpline and dedicated assistance centers will be set up.
Video surveys of houses and shops may be conducted if necessary.

Financial aid for house repairs

Flood-affected families will receive interim financial assistance of ₹15,000 from the Chief Minister's Relief Fund (CMRF) for house repairs.

Sivasagar: Approximately 55,000 families
Charaideo: 20,000 families
Jorhat: 7,000 families
Golaghat: 3,000 families

The government has stated that this amount will be disbursed to these families between August 3 and August 5. It further announced that families whose homes remain uninhabitable will receive additional assistance of ₹10,000 starting August 10.
