For many Indian travellers, attending Spain's famous La Tomatina festival is a bucket-list experience. All thanks to the unforgettable and dreamy tomato fight sequence in the blockbuster cinema
Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (ZNMD). Travellers often end up spending lakhs just to recreate that perfect ZNMD moment. But the reality is beyond throwing tomatoes joyfully at each other.
Indian solo travel creator Anali Gupta (@analligupta) recently sparked a conversation online after sharing her honest review of attending La Tomatina in Spain. In her video, she goes non-stop about how it actually feels to be a part of such a messy fest. Instead of cinematic fun, she described the festival as chaotic, exhausting and mentally tougher than she had imagined.
Not your typical Bollywood festival
She starts the video with,
“To tumhe kya laga, maine bahut maze kiye honge? Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara jaisa koi moment hoga? Bilkul nahi guys, bilkul nahi.”
Her Instagram post reads,
“La Tomatina isn’t as dreamy as Instagram makes it look. Here’s the reality.
Yes, it’s one of the world’s most iconic festivals, but it’s also one of the toughest experiences I’ve ever had. The tomatoes are often rotten, the smell can make you nauseous, and people throw them with so much force that it genuinely hurts. If you’re someone like me who doesn’t work out or isn’t physically very strong, be prepared—it can feel overwhelming.”
However, her video isn't meant to discourage travellers. Rather, it serves as a reminder that social media often captures only the most photogenic moments, leaving out the sweat, vomit, smell and all discomfort and reality on the ground.
Overripe, smelly tomatoes
As per Gupta, the first surprise were the tomatoes themselves. Contrary to what many think, participants aren't throwing fresh good-quality tomatoes. The tomatoes used in the fest are intentionally overripe and soft so they burst easily and reduce the risk of any injuries.
While this makes them safer, it also means the streets quickly fill with crushed pulp, creating a strong smell that many first-time visitors find overwhelming.
"The tomatoes are often rotten, the smell can make you nauseous," she says in the video.
People are targeted for no reason
She also warned that the moment anyone tries to take their phones out for pictures, participants would deliberately target her and won’t let her take her phone out. They will start throwing squash tomatoes before throwing them, many people still hurl them with considerable force, making impacts surprisingly painful.
Overwhelming crowds
You have to be mentally prepared for being a part of this messy festival because of the sheer density of the crowd. Thousands of people squeeze into Buñol's narrow medieval streets for just one hour of tomato throwing. Once the festival begins, moving freely becomes almost impossible.
For travellers who aren't physically strong or comfortable in packed crowds, the experience can become intimidating rather than enjoyable.
“As a woman, I found it even more intimidating. I saw couples where the husband spent the entire time shielding his wife from the crowd and flying tomatoes. The pushing, chaos, and intensity are very real”. She writes further in her post.

The history of La Tomatino dates back to 1945. A local street celebration reportedly turned into an impromptu tomato fight which today is known as La Tomatina.
