Chelsea are preparing to reward Joao Pedro with a new contract.

The Blues signed the 24-year-old from Brighton & Hove Albion in a deal worth around £60 million last summer. His current contract runs until 2032.

Even so, Chelsea are already looking to improve those terms as they aim to secure the long-term future of their ‘world-class’ striker.

The Brazil forward is regarded as an important part of Chelsea’s long-term project and is expected to play a huge role under new manager Xabi Alonso.

Chelsea are determined to keep Pedro at the club this summer and have turned away every approach made for him.

La Liga champions Barcelona were among a number of clubs to show interest in Pedro, but Chelsea made their position very clear early in the transfer window that he is not for sale at any price.

The Blues are now prepared to reinforce that stance by offering Pedro a new and improved contract, a move that would remove any remaining doubt over his long-term future.

The Brazilian enjoyed an outstanding campaign for Chelsea last season, registering 20 goals and nine assists in 50 appearances across all competitions.

He scored 15 goals in the Premier League and also contributed eight more assists in 35 league matches.

In spite of his performances for Chelsea, Pedro was left out of Brazil’s World Cup squad, with Carlo Ancelotti choosing experienced forward Neymar instead.

Pedro has carried that form into Chelsea’s pre-season tour. He grabbed the headlines by scoring a nine-minute hat-trick in the 6-4 victory over Western Sydney Warriors.

The striker could soon be reunited with a former team-mate, with Chelsea working on a deal to sign Danny Welbeck from Brighton.

The details of that move have not yet been disclosed, but Welbeck would bring experience and leadership to a dressing room packed with young talent.
