Manchester United remain the leading contenders to sign Newcastle United left-back Lewis Hall, despite Chelsea making contact with the Magpies over a possible move for the 21-year-old.

As per a report from CaughtOffside, which cited well-known transfer insider Indy Kaila on X, Chelsea have approached Newcastle about Hall. However, the Blues would need a lot of convincing before turning that interest into a serious bid. United are still understood to be in pole position.

Sky Sports had previously reported that United were keeping tabs on Hall and Antonee Robinson as left-back options, with Luke Shaw currently the only senior specialist in that role at Old Trafford. With Patrick Dorgu now being used as a winger by Michael Carrick, the position is seen as a clear structural issue going into a season that will also feature Champions League football.

Hall came through Chelsea’s academy before joining St James’ Park on a permanent transfer completed in July 2024. Any attempt to bring him back would be costly, and the situation is further complicated by the fact that Chelsea themselves approved his departure in the first place. The report adds that Chelsea’s hierarchy would still need considerable internal persuasion before taking any firm step.

That situation works in United’s favour. Chelsea have gone head-to-head with United in several areas during this transfer window, but in this case their move appears to be more of an exploratory enquiry than a serious push.

Newcastle are not under any pressure to sell. Hall is young, homegrown, proven in the Premier League, and tied down on a long-term contract. The club have also already taken significant losses over the last year following the exits of Alexander Isak, Anthony Gordon, and Sandro Tonali. Because of that, any agreement would require a substantial offer.

Importantly, Hall is believed to be open to a switch to Old Trafford, which could prove significant if United step up their pursuit. United’s need is more obvious, their interest has been more consistent, and Hall matches exactly the kind of profile — young, English, and top-flight proven — that INEOS have identified in their recruitment model.

Chelsea’s interest does add another layer to the situation, but based on the current indications, it appears more like monitoring the player than a genuine hijack attempt.
