Richarlison struck a dramatic winner in stoppage time as 10-man Tottenham Hotspur beat Chelsea 2-1 in Sydney, keeping up Roberto De Zerbi’s perfect pre-season record.
The Brazil forward turned in from close range in the second minute of added time after Jamie Donley’s attempt came back off the post, wrapping up Spurs’ fourth win in four summer friendlies despite playing for more than 40 minutes with 10 men.
Tottenham had gone ahead in the 17th minute through Sandro Tonali, who scored his first goal for the club after his £100 million transfer from Newcastle United. The midfielder’s effort took a deflection on its way into the net, but Chelsea hit back almost straightaway as Estevao headed in four minutes later to level the score.
The game turned again soon after the restart when Kevin Danso, sent on at half-time, received a straight red card only four minutes after coming on for bringing down Joao Pedro as the Chelsea attacker ran through on goal.
Xabi Alonso’s team controlled possession against 10 men but found it difficult to convert their extra man into clear chances. Antonin Kinsky was decisive in the Tottenham goal, making excellent saves to keep out both Joao Pedro and Estevao as Chelsea pushed for a winner.
Spurs, for their part, defended with determination before hitting on the break late in the match. Rio Kyerematen had already struck the crossbar before Richarlison decided the contest, reacting first after Donley’s shot hit the upright and forcing the ball home from close range.
The outcome keeps De Zerbi’s promising pre-season going, with new arrivals Andy Robertson and Jan Paul van Hecke both turning in impressive displays as Tottenham stretched their unbeaten run this summer.
Chelsea, meanwhile, were left to regret missed chances after failing to make their extra player count, even though they ended the match with the same number of shots on target as Spurs.
Tottenham will continue their preparations with a behind-closed-doors friendly against Getafe next week, while Chelsea will aim to respond as their pre-season tour goes on.
