Mumbai: The first drop after birth is not just food, but also a valuable legacy of immunity, safety and motherhood. Although the challenges of breastfeeding are increasing due to modern lifestyle, medical complications and increasing high-risk pregnancies, the importance of breast milk remains as unique as ever, as it is becoming clear on August 1, World Breastfeeding Day.

Big challenge for women in high risk group:

Around 8 to 10 thousand deliveries take place every year at the Lokmanya Tilak General Hospital of the Mumbai Municipal Corporation in Sion. Out of these, around 2 thousand women are in the high-risk group. Even in such situations, special efforts are made to maintain the breastfeeding thread between the mother and the baby. According to Dr. Swati Manerkar, Head of the Neonatal Department and Head of the Human Milk Farm, many mothers have to face physical and mental difficulties after delivery. Sometimes the baby is in the ICU, while some mothers are undergoing medical treatment.

In such cases, there is a misconception that breastfeeding is not possible. However, with proper guidance, counseling and training, most mothers can breastfeed successfully. According to experts, breast milk increases the baby’s immunity, reduces the risk of infection and strengthens the emotional bond between mother and child. Therefore, breastfeeding is not only a health necessity but also the first and most natural gift to a newborn. Mothers in the high-risk group are given special training on breastfeeding techniques, methods and how to safely deliver it to their baby. According to experts, with the right help, even high-risk mothers can provide their baby with the invaluable benefits of breast milk.

Which women are in the high risk group?

Mothers with high blood pressure (BP)
Mothers who have had bleeding during or after delivery
Women taking psychotherapy or certain medications
Low birth weight mothers
whose babies are admitted to the neonatal intensive care unit
Mothers with other medical complications
