Under the Central Government's "PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana," it initially took 118 days to enroll 100,000 families; however, this target is now being achieved in just 6 days. Shripad Yesso Naik, Minister of State for New and Renewable Energy, stated in a written reply to the Rajya Sabha that since the scheme's launch in February 2024, a total of 3,972,447 rooftop solar systems have been installed up to July 22, 2026, benefiting 4,802,717 families across the country, including those in rural areas.

Who can avail the benefits of the scheme? According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy, all residential consumers across the country—including rural households—who possess a grid-connected electricity connection from a local distribution company are eligible to avail the benefits of the "PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana." To do so, they must apply through the scheme's national portal (www.pmsuryaghar.gov.in).

**Momentum Gained Through Ecosystem Development**
At the inception of the scheme, the government established an infrastructure comprising an online portal, a nationwide vendor network, and a unified platform for electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs); initially, it took 118 days to onboard 100,000 households.

However, as the ecosystem matured, the scheme's pace accelerated; today, 100,000 new households are joining the scheme within a span of just six days.

**Total of 18.71 Lakh Rooftop Solar Systems Installed Nationwide**
Under the "PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana," a total of 18.71 lakh (1.871 million) rooftop solar systems have been installed across the country, boasting a combined solar energy capacity of 6.7 Gigawatts (GW). This initiative has benefited 22.71 lakh (2.271 million) households nationwide, including rural homes covered under the scheme.

**Over 18.93 Lakh Households Receive 'Zero' Electricity Bills**
Union Minister Shripad Yesso Naik informed the Rajya Sabha that consumers who installed rooftop solar systems under this scheme have seen a significant reduction in their electricity bills. Electricity distribution companies (DISCOMs) across the country have reported that, following the installation of rooftop solar systems, more than 18.93 lakh (1.893 million) beneficiaries—including rural households—have received 'zero' electricity bills for specific months or billing periods, based on their actual electricity consumption.
