As Vande Bharat Express trains continue to expand across the country, interest in becoming a loco pilot for India’s flagship semi-high-speed service has grown among young job seekers.

However, Indian Railways does not recruit candidates directly as Vande Bharat loco pilots. Those interested must first secure a position as an Assistant Loco Pilot (ALP) through the Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) examination. Only after gaining years of experience, maintaining a strong service record and completing specialised training can they be selected to operate premium trains such as Vande Bharat.

Candidates applying for the Assistant Loco Pilot post must meet the following eligibility criteria:

• Pass Class 10.
• Hold an ITI certificate in a relevant trade, or a diploma or degree in Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics, Automobile or related engineering disciplines.
• Be between 18 and 30 years of age in most recruitment cycles.
• Clear the medical and vision tests prescribed by Indian Railways.

The journey to becoming a Vande Bharat loco pilot involves several stages. After joining as an Assistant Loco Pilot, employees gain practical experience by operating regular trains.

Based on performance, safety record and years of service, they are promoted to higher positions. Candidates selected for premium train operations must also complete specialised technical training before being assigned to Vande Bharat services.

An Assistant Loco Pilot receives a starting basic pay of Rs 19,900. After including Dearness Allowance (DA), House Rent Allowance (HRA), Transport Allowance and other benefits, the monthly salary generally ranges between Rs 35,000 and Rs 40,000.

With promotions and experience, earnings increase significantly. Experienced loco pilots operating premium services such as Vande Bharat may receive Rs 1 lakh or more per month, depending on their pay level and allowances.

Besides salary, Indian Railways offers several benefits, including DA, HRA, transport allowance, night duty allowance, medical facilities, pension benefits, railway travel concessions, paid leave, job security and opportunities for career advancement.

As the Vande Bharat network expands across India, the demand for skilled loco pilots is expected to rise. Although there is no direct recruitment for the role, Indian Railways provides a clear career path through the Assistant Loco Pilot position, making it an attractive government career option for aspiring candidates.
